National A-Team Pool announced

We are delighted to invite the following 26 young players to form the National A-Team Pool, taking part in the regular, twice weekly, training programme in preparation for tournaments aIMG_5435and tours later in the year. This follows a tight selection process involving nominations from ACA Clubs, followed by training sessions, a first ever trial and taking into account previous performances of players in ACA league cricket.

The initial pool of players come from 10 ACA clubs and range in age from 16 to 28 years of age.

This heralds a new phase in the development of Austrian cricket and builds on the work carried out by many promoting the development of youth cricket and linking this with the future National Team goals. As it is focused on the future, only players up to the age of 30 are eligible and selection has been based purely on ability and potential – players who have the potential to be stars in the National Teams of the future and to contribute to building a stronger future for cricket in Austria.

Coaching will be headed and led by Oscar Wanigasekera and he will be supported by Marcel Biersteker. As with the other SNASY initiatives, this program is supported and underpinned by the Austria Cricket Association – Österreich Cricket Verband.

The quality of players available and strength in depth is such that in addition to the 26 players who have been selected to the National A-Team Pool, two others have been invited to attend all sessions to benefit from the training and a further 10 are on STANDBY. The Standby players will be invited regularly, but less frequently, to take part and benefit from the development environment. It should be stressed that an initial Pool has been selected, but it will be constantly reviewed and may change based on performances and commitment.  All players, who are invited to attend the training, have the chance to be included in the Pool and in the exciting fixtures that lie ahead.

Other players who were nominated, mostly younger players, will continue to attend the SNASY Academy to further develop their skills – their time will come!

In addition, some of our talented young Austrians are playing cricket in the UK.  As the A-Team will be touring the UK in August, these players will be invited to join us for training in the UK.

Great Young Talent and Potential on Show: A-Team Trial

IMG_5435aOn Friday, 1st May, the Austria A-Team trial took place to select players who will be invited to join the Austria A-Team training and development squad.  40 players from 11 clubs took part in a 70 over test of cricketing skills at the Austria Cricket Stadium, (ACS), Markommanenstrasse, in Vienna.  They were watched and assessed by Oscar Wanigasekera, (head coach), Marcel Biersteker (coach), Anish Gupta (Development Officer, ACA) and Matt Toogood (SNASY).

And there was some real young talent and potential on display, with players aging from 16 to 28, IMG_5438with all types of bowler  – right arm fast, left arm fast, leg break, off break and slow left arm, some powerful and some more cultured batting performances and some quality keeping and fielding skills.

A young squad will now be selected, who will train together twice weekly at the ACS, led by head coach Oscar Wanigasekera.  From the squad, players will selected to take part in an international tournament in July and then a UK tour in August – all of which further develops our young talented players and our future national teams.

All of this, of course, builds on years of dedication to cricket in Austria by many individuals and as head coach Oscar said, “our job now is to take it further into the future, improving the quality of cricket and the depth of cricket at all levels in Austria”. IMG_5478

Austria A-Team Trial on Friday! Good luck to all!

We are approaching the final trial for the Austria A-Team for 2015, which will take place this Friday, 1st May from 13:00 at ACS, Markommanenstrasse, 1220 Wien. We have ended up with over 50 nominations from 11 clubs – which is great. Austria shirt

Here is some important information about the trial.

  • The trial will start at 13:00 and so players should arrive in time to be ready and changed for action. Late arrival will not be seen as good practice.
  • Each player is responsible for bringing and looking after their own kit – no bats/pads/etc. will be provided by SNASY/ACA for the trial.
  • The forecast for Friday isn’t great, but the trial will take place whatever the weather.
  • During the trial, we will require from the players information about nationality and length of time in Austria etc. More details are available from your club chairmen.

After the trial, a group of between 20 – 25 players will be selected to attend the regular Austria A-Team training which will take place every Wednesday and Friday evening at ACS. As stated before, players will be selected based on trials and on performances for their clubs and will include a balance of batsmen, keepers, fast and slow bowlers. As it is focused on the future, only players up to the age of 30 will be eligible and selection will be based purely on ability and potential. Players and clubs will be notified as soon as possible.

Good luck to all players!

Best Cricketing Wishes,

Matt Toogood, Oscar Wanigasekera

SNASY Academy Training to Start again on 25th April at ACS

This was built on an idea that had been discussed for a number of years – that a successful cricketing future in Austria depends on a successful junior and youth program. Continue reading
